Today at The Hook

Rugged Coastline

Pass the rugged cliffs, the bright sea pinks, ancient ruins and traditional villages until you reach the Peninsula’s southern most tip and
you will be rewarded with a rare sight; a breath taking panoramic coupled with Ireland’s ancient heritage.

As you turn the last bend in the road and spot the iconic black and white striped lighthouse tower sitting majestically at the very tip of the Hook Peninsula you will immediately fall under its hypnotic spell.

No.1 Lighthouse In The World

Hook Lighthouse in County Wexford has been voted the number one lighthouse in the world and is an enduringly popular attraction in south east Ireland. Described by Lonely Planet Guide as a “little plump lighthouse, the granddaddy of all lighthouses”, it has been marking the entrance to Waterford Harbour for at least 2,000 years.

800 Years Old

The 800-year-old Lighthouse tower is surrounded by jagged rocks, blowholes, fossils and of course the ocean. Landside you can enjoy a picnic on the Lighthouse lawn or browse the gift and craft shop that naturally is filled with a maritime flavour.

Café

Take breakfast, lunch or a sweet treat and great coffee at the Lightkeeper’s House Café or enjoy an art workshop with resident artist Rose. Explore the Irish Whale and Dolphin group displays and the maritime heritage and rescue services history.

Take a Tour

Take a tour and the friendly team at Hook Lighthouse will guide you through the 800 years of the Lighthouse history. Meet the life-size figures of St. Dubhan who established the lighthouse with his fellow monks in the fifth century on the second floor meet William Marshal ‘the greatest knight that ever lived’ as he tells his tale of
building the medieval tower in the 13th century and learn of life as a light-keeper before you climb outside to the fourth floor balcony to enjoy a vista like no other. Watch out for the sea spray, which can reach the top of the tower in stormy weather.

Festivals & Events

If you are lucky enough to be visiting during on of the many Hook Lighthouse festivals or during one of the fun filled seasonal events then sit back and enjoy the seaside fun on offer.

Individual and group tour bookings can be made by calling 051 397055.
